Recapping a 2013 First-Year Player Draft

Over the last two weeks, I’ve been participating in a five round 2013 first-year player draft in the same league that I drafted prior to this season and wrote all about here. I have put some of my picks up on Twitter, but at the request of a couple of readers, I’m going to take a closer look at the entire draft here. And before we dive into this, you can find my initial Top 40 2013 Signees list right here at The Dynasty Guru.

As a reminder, as far as league context goes, it is a 7×7 H2H league that uses all of the standard 5×5 categories, plus OPS/Total Bases for hitters and Quality Starts/Holds for pitchers. The active rosters are one player per position (OF are broken out by LF/CF/RF) plus a Utility player on offense, and nine pitchers (2 SP, 2 RP, 5 P). On top of that, there are 7 reserve spots, 3 DL spots and 20 minor league spots. So, all in all, it’s a very deep league with an active lineup that skews a little towards pitching and deep minor league rosters (600 total prospects are rostered). Oh, and by the way, I’m the Minnesota Twins.

Without any further ado, let’s jump right into the draft.

Round 1–

1.1 Arizona Diamondbacks 12:00-12:30 — Kris Bryant – 3B/CHC
1.2 Milwaukee Brewers 12:30-1:00 — Clint Frazier – OF/CLE
1.3 San Francisco Giants 1:00-1:30 — Mark Appel – SP/HOU
1.4 Milwaukee Brewers 1:30-2:00 — Jonathan Gray SP/COL
1.5 Seattle Mariners 2:00-2:30 — Austin Meadows – OF/PITT
1.6 Milwaukee Brewers 2:30-3:00 — Kohl Stewart – SP/MIN
*1.7 Minnesota Twins 3:00-3:30 — Dominic Smith – 1B/NYM*
1.8 Houston Astros 3:30-4:00 — D.J. Peterson – 1B/SEA
1.9 Houston Astros 4:00-4:30 — Trey Ball – LHP/BOS
1.10 Seattle Mariners 4:30-5:00 — Hunter Renfroe OF/SD
1.11 Milwaukee Brewers 5:00-5:30 — Reese McGuire C/PIT
1.12 San Fran Giants 5:30-6:00 — Colin Moran 3B/MIA
1.13 New York Mets 6:00-6:30 — Braden Shipley SP/ARI
1.14 Oakland Athletics 6:30-7:00 — Sean Manaea LHP/KC
1.15 Cincinnati Reds 7:00-7:30 — Ryne Stanek P/TB
1.16 Chicago Cubs 7:30-8:00 — Hunter Dozier 3B/KC
1.17 Boston Red Sox 8:00-8:30 — Tim Anderson SS/CWS
1.18 Los Angeles Angels 8:30-9:00 — JP Crawford SS/PHI
1.19 San Diego Padres 9:00-9:30 — Eric Jagielo 3B/NYY
1.20 San Fran Giants 9:30-10:00 — Phil Ervin OF/CIN

My Pick: It may be due to the 2013 draft being a down class, but Smith is one of the best pure bats entering pro ball this year. The likely 1B eligibility brings the value down slightly, but he still carries a lot of it. The pick ended up coming down to him and Colin Moran, who I actually ranked one spot ahead of him in my Top 40. I went with Smith because they’re both very close and some of Moran’s value is tied up in him being a 3B who is close, and neither of those things made him attractive to me based on roster composition.
Picks I Liked: J.P. Crawford at 18th overall. He was #3 on my list of players to choose from at Number 7, so to see him drop that far was pretty surprising. Also, Colin Moran at 12th overall, based on what I said earlier and how close I came to taking him myself.
Picks I Didn’t Love: Not much here to complain about, but Hunter Dozier over Tim Anderson and JP Crawford may be a decision that the Cubs end up regretting in the future. Same with the team who popped Reese McGuire at the 11th pick. He’s a solid catching prospect, but catching prospects are inherently risky.
Round 2–
2.1 San Francisco Giants – 12:00-12:30 — Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez SP/PHI
2.2 Milwaukee Brewers – 12:30-1:00 — Aaron Judge OF/NYY
2.3 Baltimore Orioles 1:00-1:30 — Billy McKinney OF/OAK
2.4 Boston Red Sox 1:30-2:00 — Chris Anderson SP/LAD
2.5 Seattle Mariners 2:00 – 2:30 — Ian Clarkin SP/NYY
2.6 Detroit Tigers 2:30-3:00 — Rob Kaminsky SP/STL
*2.7 Minnesota Twins 3:00-3:30 — Devin Williams SP/MIL*
2.8 Chicago Cubs 3:30-4:00 — Austin Wilson OF/SEA
2.9 Atlanta Braves 4:00-4:30 — Eloy Jimenez – OF/CHC
2.10 Atlanta Braves 4:30-5:00 — Jon Denney – C/BOS
2.11 Baltimore Orioles 5:00-5:30 — Dustin Peterson 3B,SS/SDP
2.12 Seattle Mariners 5:30-6:00 — Micker Adolfo Zapata OF/CWS
2.13 New York Mets 6:00-6:30 — Hunter Harvey SP/BAL
2.14 Oakland Athletics 6:30-7:00 — Oscar Mercado SS/STL
2.15 Cincinnati Reds 7:00-7:30 — Marco Gonzales SP/STL
2.16 Atlanta Braves 7:30-8:00 — Jonathan Crawford – RHP/DET
2.17 Boston Red Sox 8:00-8:30 — Alex Gonzalez – RHP/TEX
2.18 Los Angeles Angels 8:30-9:00 — Nick Ciuffo – C/TAM
2.19 Atlanta Braves 9:00-9:30 — Gleyber Torres – SS/CHC
2.20 San Diego Padres 9:30-10:00 — Bobby Wahl – RHP/OAK
My Pick: Williams is an exciting pitching prospect, showing high-quality stuff and athleticism. He can touch the mid-90’s with his fastball and can control it very well for an 18-year old. If the secondary stuff comes around, he could be a potential #2 starter in the NL Central.
Picks I Liked: I was hoping that Kaminsky would fall to me, as I slightly prefer him to Williams, but it was not meant to be. The Tigers got a bit of a steal at 26th overall. Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez was available to draft here, but fell to the second round where his upside and major league readiness was that of a first round pick.
Picks I Didn’t Love: I’m not much of a Chris Anderson believer, and him going ahead of Kaminsky and Williams was a bit of a surprise. Jonathan Crawford is very likely a reliever and the second round is a little early to take someone who profiles that way.
Round 3–
3.1 San Francisco Giants 12:00-12:30 — Tyler O’Neil OF/SEA
3.2 Baltimore Orioles — Ryan Eades SP/MIN 12:30-1:00
3.3 Pittsburgh Pirates 1:00-1:30 — Travis Demeritte SS/TEX
3.4 Detroit Tigers 1:30-2:00 — Ivan Wilson OF/NYM
3.5 Baltimore Orioles 2:00-2:30 — Dylan Covey SP/OAK
3.6 Detroit Tigers 2:30-3:00 — Alex Balog SP/COL
*3.7 Minnesota Twins 3:00-3:30 — Hunter Green – LHP/LAA*
3.8 Chicago Cubs 3:30-4:00 — Cody Reed – LHP/KC
3.9 Houston Astros 4:00-4:30 — Tom Windle – LHP/LAD
3.10 Baltimore Orioles 4:30-5:00 — Jacoby Jones OF/PIT
3.11 Baltimore Orioles 5:00-5:30 — Andrew Knapp C/PHI
3.12 San Diego Padres 5:30-6:00 — Corey Knebel RHP/DET
3.13 New York Mets 6:00-6:30 — Andrew Thurman SP/HOU
3.14 Oakland Athletics 6:30-7:00 — Jordan Paroubeck OF/SD
3.15 Cincinnati Reds 7:00-7:30 — Rowdy Tellez 1B/TOR
3.16 Chicago Cubs 7:30-8:00 — Ryan McMahon 3B/COL
3.17 Boston Red Sox 8:00-8:30 — Gosuke Katoh 2B/NYY
3.18 Los Angeles Angels 8:30-9:00 — Christian Arroyo SS/SFG
3.19 Pittsburgh Pirates 9:00-9:30 — Clinton Hollon SP/TOR
3.20 San Diego Padres 9:30-10:00 — Jason Hursh RHP/ATL
My Pick: I was pretty surprised that Green was still available at this point, as he was one of the top prep lefties available in the 2013 draft. He’s raw and has room to grow in his velocity, but was also just 17 years old at the time of the draft. There’s upside all over the place with this selection, and nearly 50 picks into the draft, that’s all you can really ask for.
Picks I liked: I was holding out a little hope that either Jordan Paroubeck and Ryan McMahon would be around when I drafted in the 4th round, but it was not meant to be. Regardless of that, the Athletics and Cubs got pretty nice steals at this point.
Picks I Didn’t Love: I know Dylan Covey has some name recognition as he was a former first round pick that didn’t sign, but he’s not much more than a middle relief profile at this point. That said, it’s tough to really criticize any picks at this point given the dearth of talent available this late.
Round 4–
4.1 Seattle Mariners (via Giants ) 12:00-12:30 — Justin Williams OF/ARZ
4.2 Arizona Diamondbacks (via Brewers) 12:30-1:00 — Cord Sandberg OF/PHI
4.3 Atlanta Braves (via Pirates/Diamondbacks) 1:00-1:30 — Carlos Salazar (RHP|ATL)
4.4 Toronto Bluejays 1:30-2:00–Kevin Franklin 3B/Cin
4.5 Oakland Athletics (via Giants/Mariners) 2:00-2:30 – Brian Ragira 1B/SF
4.6 Detroit Tigers 2:30-3:00 — Jan Hernandez SS/3B/PHI
*4.7 Minnesota Twins 3:00-3:30 — Josh Hart OF/BAL*
4.8 Atlanta Braves (via Cubs) 3:30-4:00 — Jared King OF/NYM
4.9 Houston Astros 4:00-4:30 — Aaron Blair – RHP/ARZ
4.10 Baltimore Orioles (WAS) 4:30-5:00 — Matt Ziomeka LHP/DET
4.11 Baltimore Orioles 5:00-5:30 — Rob Zastryzny LHP/CHC
4.12 Texas Rangers 5:30-6:00–David Ledbetter-RHP/TEX
4.13 New York Mets 6:00-6:30 — LJ Mazzili 2B/NYM
4.14 Pittsburgh Pirates (via Athletics) 6:30-7:00 — Jacob Brentz – TOR/LHP
4.15 Cincinnati Reds 7:00-7:30 — Garret t Williams OF/SD
4.16 Pittsburgh Pirates (via Braves) 7:30-8:00 — Teddy Stankiewicz – BOS/SP
4.17 Boston Red Sox 8:00-8:30 – Riley Unroe – TAM/SS
4.18 Los Angeles Angels 8:30-9:00 – Michael Lorenzen – CIN/RHP
4.19 Toronto Bluejays (via Pirates) 9:00-9:30–Ryder Jones- SF/3B
4.20 San Diego Padres — Trey Masek RHP/CHC
My Pick: I’m not crazy about Hart in this type of format (steals are devalued in a 7×7 league), but couldn’t pass him up at this point. He projects to be a potential top of the order hitter who can steal bases in bunches. Though what he has going against him is the same thing that Hunter Green had going for him–Hart was one of the oldest bats in his draft class.
Picks I liked: I was really hoping that Cord Sandberg would fall to me here, but the Diamondbacks grabbed him in a very shrewd move. My backup pick after Hart was likely Riley Unroe, but the Red Sox ensured that he wasn’t around for me in the 5th round.
Picks I Didn’t Love: Not Applicable. Too Deep.
Round 5–
5.1 Oakland Athletics 12:00-12:30 – Leonardo Molina OF/NYY
5.2 Texas Rangers 12:30-1:00-Chad Pinder SS/OAK
5.3 Cubs 1:00-1:30 Drew Ward 3B/WSH
5.4 Toronto Bluejays 1:30-2:00–Andrew Church RHP/NYM
5.5 Seattle Mariners 2:00-2:30– Lewin Diaz 1B/OF/Twins
5.6 Detroit Tigers 2:30-3:00 — Dillon Overton LHP/OAK
*5.7 Minnesota Twins 3:00-3:30 — Terry McClure OF/COL*
5.8 Washington Nationals 3:30-4:00 — Trevor Williams SP/MIA
5.9 Houston Astros 4:00-4:30 — Kyle Wren – OF/ATL
5.10 Washington Nationals 4:30-5:00 — Blake Taylor LHP/PIT
5.11 Pittsburgh Pirates 5:00-5:30 — Jen-Ho Tseng SP/CHC
5.12 Arizona Diamondbacks 5:30-6:00 — Keynan Middleton SP/LAA
5.13 New York Mets 6:00-6:30 — Casey Meisner RHP/NYM
5.14 Oakland Athletics 6:30-7:00 — SKIPPED
5.15 Cincinnati Reds 7:00-7:30 — Conrad Gregor 1B/Hou
5.16 Arizona Diamondbacks 7:30-8:00 — KJ Woods OF/MIA
5.17 Boston Red Sox 8:00-8:30 — Skipped
5.18 Los Angeles Angels 8:30-9:00 — Tyler Danish RHP/chw
5.19 Arizona Diamondbacks 9:00-9:30 — Matt MacPhearson OF/Ari
5.20 San Diego Padres 9:30-10:00 — SKIPPED
My Pick: When in doubt, take a hitter in the Colorado system–and this has nothing to do with Coors Field. Every affiliate the Rockies have in the low minors, from the Pioneer League to Asheville to Modesto, is a great environment to hit in. Good minor league stats are good for flipping prospects.
